From imdb: ”During the filming of some scenes for The Princess Bride, the weather became markedly cold for Robin Wright Penn. Andre the Giant helped her by placing one of his hands over her head; his hands were so large that one would entirely cover the top of her head, keeping her warm.”

comic by Box Brown :: via flickr.com

This is so sweet how can I NOT reblog this.

D’aaawwww.

All of the behind the scenes stories about Andre the Giant were adorable like this, Apparently Wallace Shawn is deathly afraid of heights, so he was freaking out while they were doing the scene scaling the cliff and Andre was like “it is okay, I’ll keep you safe.” there’s a behind the scenes thing on the DVD and everyone is choked up and misty eyed when they talk about working with him.

Andre the Giant was a radiant human being.

There have been some nice moments. I did have fun seeing the fam, especially my goofy, adorable, and wonderful little nephews. I have had some good times with friends. My sister’s annual birthday/holiday party was especially nice, and I also had a great time at the bar with a few old friends a couple of nights ago.

But overall, things at home have just felt *off*, much as they did in the summer. There is less drama now than there was then. But there is still so much tension, even if it is now mostly just under the surface. This Christmas we didn’t drink and play games and laugh the way we usually do. Everything was much more subdued than normal. Things were not joyful and festive in the way they have been in years past.

Perhaps part of it is that we actually celebrated this year on Christmas Eve (to work around Matt’s family’s schedule). This left Christmas Day completely empty. It would have been a lot nicer, less empty, if Jaron could have made it home. As it was, Colin is at his girlfriend’s, John spent the day hiding out upstairs (as he usually does now), and there has been very little interaction of any sort among the family all day.

This Christmas is simply so much less than past Christmases have been.

I’ve also not had the chance to hang out with some friends that I would like to see. A couple of friends have basically blown me off on a couple of different occasions. In some ways, with some people, this is understandable. But it still sucks, and it still has left me stuck at home on some evenings without much to do but wallow in the tension that exists here.

Home feels less and less like home; I notice it now every time I visit. The last few times I’ve been here, I’ve found myself anxious to return to Miami long before it is time to return. But not long after I get back there, I find myself feeling homesick. Longing for a place that doesn’t quite exist anymore, not really.

‘You can’t go home again’, they say. I guess that becomes true for us all, sooner or later.

God and Logic

This is a first.

On a simple quiz I gave to students to test their understanding of valid argument structures, I included the following argument (among several others):

Premise 1: If the Bible is accurate, then God exists.
Premise 2: God does not exist.
Conclusion: Therefore, the Bible is not accurate.

They were simply asked to identify whether the argument is valid (which it is, it’s a very simple and straightforward Modus Tollens), and whether it commits any of the short list of fallacies that we discussed (it doesn’t).

In response, one of my students wrote “Choose not to answer this question because my own personal beliefs”.

Um, ok?

Nobody was being asked to accept any of the arguments. They were just being asked to assess their structures and whether they commit the fallacies we discussed. What do you think - are religious beliefs (which I can only assume is what the student was referring to) legitimate grounds to refuse to answer this question?

Video

thebunnygirl:

I’ve done a lot of personal mourning this year, and losing one of my heroes has me in a state of disbelief. It is true that I have not been happy with the direction in which the quality of Apple products have been heading in the past few years, but I have remained loyal to the brand since my first IIGS in 1987. I have experienced many sad days recently, and this one is no different. Mr. Jobs, your work helped shaped me as both a geek as well as a perfectionist, and you are already missed very much.

I was gonna write a whole blog post about how weirdly different life has been since I got back to Miami (new roommate, missing old roommates, new full-time professor job, etc), but as I tried to think about how to express how strange and difficult (and also fun and interesting) it has been adjusting to all of this change, all that kept coming to mind was this tune. So, we’ll just go with that and call it good.
